GUD Automotive's Ryco Filters brand is the market leading automotive filtration brand in Australasia and as such the distribution operations required a large footprint sized warehouse that included a specialized engineering laboratory used for the testing of their automotive products, Ryco Filters and Goss fuel pumps. The investment in larger operating facilities has enhanced their design and testing capabilities with the laboratory facilities (to be) one of the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. This state-of-the-art facility was designed by Watson Young Architects with the structural engineering performed by Klopfer Dobos.

A portal frame structure with a purlin supported roof and steel cladding was chosen. The specification called for roof sheeting to the external canopies, placed over galvanised metal purlins with box gutters. Industry standard purlins were thus adopted.

Metalform Structures was the awarded purlin supplier and, at the awarded fabricators request, was asked to put forward a Max-Span redesign. Working in consultation with Klopfer Dobos engineers, the new, more efficient profiles were adopted and resulted in a 10% reduction in steel mass.

The Maxspan purlin range have been designed for maximum efficiency and will assist the Commercial Construction market in producing cost effective structures that don't compromise on strength or safety. Utilising patented web stiffening technology the Maxspan purlin profile geometry is balanced for ultimate strength and serviceability according to AS/NZS 4600:2006.
